India’s Unified Payments Interface had 55.49 crore onboarded users as of June 2026, equivalent to 554.9 million, according to a Finance Ministry statement published on 20 July. The disclosure illustrates the reach of a payment network increasingly embedded in everyday commerce.

The ministry reported 24,161.69 crore transactions during the 2025–26 financial year, with a value of 314.23 lakh crore rupees. These are transaction totals, not a count of unique shoppers or businesses, and the onboarded-user figure should not be confused with monthly active users.

The statement also set out security measures adopted by the government, Reserve Bank of India and National Payments Corporation of India. They include risk-based transaction limits, safeguards around unauthorised mobile-number changes and SMS authentication, and stronger requirements for payment applications. NPCI has issued information-security and mobile-application frameworks to reinforce resilience.

Cross-border connections add another dimension. The ministry listed person-to-person connectivity with Singapore’s PayNow and merchant-payment arrangements in Nepal and Cambodia. Availability differs by country and partner. These July disclosures do not establish universal overseas merchant acceptance.
