Australian Red Cross said on 4 June 2024 that donors continued to support its work despite pressure on household finances. Its release reported 69,000 people donating an average of A$400 between May 2022 and December 2023.

The organisation also reported a 21% reduction in donations compared with May 2021 to December 2022. These are the organisation’s stated comparison windows, rather than calendar-year totals. The release linked the strain on giving to higher living costs and consecutive interest-rate increases.

Low-income donors contributed A$6.2 million and gave a slightly higher share of income than middle- and high-income groups, according to the organisation’s data. Women accounted for 56% of donors. Western Australia recorded the highest average donation among states and territories.

The figures accompanied a description of services including disaster support, migration programmes, first-aid training and assistance for older or vulnerable people. They offer a historical view of one charity’s donor base, and should not be treated as a survey of all Australian philanthropy.
