Australia’s GDP increased 0.6% in the December quarter of 2024 and 1.3% over the year, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics release of 5 March 2025. These were seasonally adjusted estimates using chain volume measures.
Growth was spread across public and private spending, with exports of goods and services also contributing. GDP per person edged up 0.1%, ending seven consecutive quarters of declines, although the annual per-person comparison remained negative.
Private investment rose 0.3%. Engineering work, electricity generation and distribution projects, and mining investment supported the increase. Dwelling investment moved the other way, falling 0.4% as cost and labour pressures continued to affect housing work.
The household saving ratio rose to 3.8% from 3.6%. Read together, the figures described a modest improvement rather than uniform strength: overall output, housing investment and per-person activity were moving at different speeds. This briefing records the figures as originally released, which may differ from subsequent revisions.
