Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry launched J-Startup Impact on 6 October 2023, selecting 30 companies for concentrated public- and private-sector support. The programme sought to raise awareness of businesses combining solutions to social challenges with sustainable economic growth.

Selected companies included Gojo & Company, WOTA, Astroscale Japan, HERALBONY and euglena. The group covered a range of business models, reflecting a programme organised around intended impact rather than a single technology or industry.

The ministry said support would include opportunities available through the existing J-Startup initiative. These covered exhibitions in Japan and overseas, local assistance abroad, access to bidding opportunities and business matching with private companies. Additional expert advice would address impact measurement, management and global certification.

The policy highlighted a practical challenge for impact ventures: building a viable company while explaining and tracking its wider contribution. Selection was an offer of support and visibility; it was not evidence that every venture had already achieved its intended social or environmental outcomes.
