Japan received an estimated 36,869,900 international visitor arrivals in 2024, according to figures released by the Japan National Tourism Organization on 15 January 2025. The preliminary annual total was 47.1% higher than 2023 and 15.6% above 2019.
December accounted for 3,489,800 arrivals, a 27.6% increase from a year earlier. The year-end figures provided hotels, transport operators and retailers with a broad measure of the recovery in international travel, although arrivals alone do not measure visitor spending.
South Korea was the largest source market in the annual table, with about 8.82 million arrivals. China contributed approximately 6.98 million and Taiwan 6.04 million. Visitors from Singapore reached 691,100, while Australia accounted for 920,200, illustrating the importance of regional travel flows.
JNTO classified the 2024 numbers as preliminary estimates. Its arrival measure also includes categories such as international students and transit travellers, so it is broader than a count of holidaymakers.
