Singapore’s container throughput rose 5.4% to 41.12 million twenty-foot equivalent units in 2024, crossing 40 million for the first time. The Maritime and Port Authority published the figures on 15 January 2025 in its annual industry review.
The figures describe a hub serving international supply chains. Around 90% of containers were transshipped onward. Total cargo handled reached 622.67 million tonnes, while arriving vessels represented 3.11 billion gross tonnage, both above the previous year’s levels.
Disruption in the Red Sea put pressure on port operations during 2024. Measures included bringing new Tuas berths into service, reopening space at Keppel Terminal and increasing manpower. Marine fuel sales also reached a record 54.92 million tonnes as shipping routes lengthened.
The broader maritime cluster expanded alongside port activity. Key companies monitored by MPA spent S$5.2 billion locally, compared with S$4.8 billion in 2023. This historical briefing records the January 2025 announcement; its figures describe 2024 rather than current port conditions.
