Google announced a US$2 billion investment in Malaysia on 30 May 2024, including its first data centre and Google Cloud region in the country. The selected location was Sime Darby Property’s Elmina Business Park in Greater Kuala Lumpur.
The company said the data centre would support services including Search, Maps and Workspace. Its cloud region was intended to serve enterprises, startups and public organisations with local infrastructure and controls addressing security, compliance and data storage requirements.
The announcement also included education initiatives. Gemini Academy focused on helping teachers use generative AI, while Experience AI offered materials and training for teaching students aged 11 to 14. Those programmes added workforce development to the infrastructure commitment.
A Google-commissioned impact report estimated contributions exceeding US$3.2 billion to GDP and support for 26,500 jobs by 2030. These were forward-looking estimates associated with the announcement, not independently verified realised benefits. This briefing records the investment plan as described when it was announced.
