Malaysia’s economy expanded an estimated 5.3% year on year in the third quarter of 2026, the Department of Statistics Malaysia reported on 16 October. The advance estimate followed growth of 6.0% in the preceding quarter, as stated in the same release.
Across the first three quarters, the department estimated growth of 5.5%, compared with 4.8% in the corresponding period of 2025. That cumulative comparison adds context to the quarterly slowdown: a moderation in the latest annual growth rate can occur while the year-to-date performance remains stronger than a year earlier.
The accompanying publication estimated third-quarter GDP at RM466.4 billion at constant 2015 prices. It reported expansion across almost all economic sectors, with mining and quarrying the exception. The constant-price measure is intended to describe changes in economic output rather than simply changes in current selling prices.
Advance estimates are designed to provide an early reading. The department explains that the third-quarter calculation uses available July and August information, supplemented by estimates where data are not yet available. It scheduled the fuller third-quarter GDP publication for 18 November 2026. Businesses comparing demand across sectors should therefore treat the figures as an initial official assessment, subject to revision as more information becomes available.
